Ottawa fire respond to three blazes in 24-hour period

Firefighters in Ottawa have been kept busy in the last 24 hours as crews responded to three calls since Thursday afternoon.

The first was at 2:05 p.m. on Oct. 10 for a residential fire in the Hawthorne Meadows area. A resident of the community called to report smoke coming from a house on the 2000 block of Tawney Road. The caller said no one was inside but the family owned a cat.

Crews began a fast attack on the flames while another set of firefighters searched the home. Officials had to pull the ceiling down in the kitchen to access the blaze.

While searching the home, firefighters did find the cat who had succumbed to their injuries.

Chainsaws and an aerial ladder was used to cut holes in the roof for ventilation and for better access. Crews had the fire out by 2:35 p.m.

Two adults are displaced due to the blaze.

The second fire happened late Oct. 10 in the Lowertown area.

A Korean restaurant on Nelson Street was on fire. Crews arrived to find the building totally engulfed in flames and a working fire was declared in order to dispatch more resources to the scene.

Firefighters began a fast attack, moving inside the structure with a hose.

The blaze was declared under control within 30 minutes of arriving on scene and was contained before it could spread past the point of origin.

The third fire happened Friday at 5:55 a.m.

A 9-1-1 call from a resident described smoke and fire in their two-storey single-family home.

Crews drove to the 100 block of Irving Avenue and confirmed smoke coming from a roof vent and attic window.

Firefighters had an advanced hose line in toward the second floor bathroom and quickly found flames in the fan.

The small blaze was under control 15 minutes after officials were on scene.
