Ottawa firefighters battle three blazes in 24-hour period

Firefighters had a busy 24-hour period over the weekend battling multiple blazes in the city.

According to a release, the first of three fires happened in the 100 block of Rochester Street at around 5:22 p.m. on Saturday.

Crews initially got a call that a car had caught fire, once on scene they confirmed the vehicle was behind a low-rise commercial building.

After dispatching additional resources, firefighters advanced a hose line and searched the building for occupants.

At 5:47 p.m. the fire was declared under control with no injuries.

A second fire was called in at 11:41 p.m. on Saturday in the 200 block of Bay Street. The 911 caller initially said there was a fire in the basement of a multi-unit residential low-rise building.

Fire crews confirmed smoke from the side of a two-storey structure. More firefighters arrived on scene by 11:44 p.m.

The fast attack began with a hose in the building and crews searching the structure for occupants. Firefighters rescued a trapped person from the second-floor window using a ground later.

A second person was said to be inside but officials completed two more searches and found no one else.

An OC Transpo bus was needed to shelter the residents who evacuated safely.

Finally, on Sunday at 6:10 a.m. a person called firefighters for a front deck on fire. This happened in the 200 block of Kenwood Avenue in a single family home.

Crews saw the front porch engulfed with flames stretching to the ceiling and through the roof. Minutes later additional resourced arrived.

After searching the home no one else was found and the fire was over by 7:01 a.m.
