Ottawa firefighters knock down large attic fire near Civic Hospital

There are no injuries following a residential fire near the Civic Hospital.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 4, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a fire in the 100 block of Hutchison Avenue.

A resident had called 9-1-1 to a report a fire that had started in the attic of a two-storey single family home.

Firefighters arrived and confirmed heavy smoke coming from the roof of the home and additional resources were dispatched to the scene.

Crews began a fast attack, advancing a hose line inside the home.

The homeowner was already outside OFS arrived and reported that everyone had safely exited the structure. Firefighters did two full searches and confirmed there were no occupants inside but did locate a cat in the basement, which was safely brought to its owner.

Firefighters opened parts of the ceiling to access and extinguish the flames, but when the roof became compromised, crews had to evacuate due to safety concerns.

An aerial ladder was used to remove the roof vents and flow water into the attic.

The fire was declared under control at shortly after midnight and a thermal imaging camera (TIC) was used to locate and extinguish hot spots.

A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene top determine the cause of the blaze.
