A dog is recovering following a basement fire in Ottawa’s south end.
Around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a home in the 100 block of Finn Crescent.
A 9-1-1 caller had reported smoke coming from their neighbour’s home.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes of being dispatched and confirmed smoke coming from the front of the two-storey single-family home.
A working fire was declared to dispatch additional resources to the scene and fire crews were told a resident had gone back inside to retrieve multiple pets.
Firefighters advanced a hose line inside and began a fast attack, while a second crew began searching the smoke-filled home for occupants.
After two full searches of the home, it was confirmed there were no occupants inside, though firefighters did locate four dogs, including one without vital signs.
All four dogs were brought outside where firefighters did CPR and delivered oxygen through the use of a special mask designed for animals.
Firefighters successfully revived the dog, which was then taken to an animal hospital for further treatment.
Firefighters contained the fire to the basement before it could spread, and a fire investigator has responded.
There are no reports of human injuries.
