Ottawa man charged in multi-jurisdictional dangerous driving incident

An Ottawa man is facing 10 charges after multi-jurisdictional dangerous driving investigation.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, Leeds County OPP officers were contacted to assist Belleville police and Quinte West OPP in locating a dangerous driver.

It was reported the driver had nearly struck firefighters in Belleville and was then seen speeding Highway 401, including on the shoulders.

According to the OPP, the driver refused to stop for police, but was eventually arrested without incident.

As a result of this investigation, Robert K. Smith, 55, of Ottawa, faces the following charges:

  • Dangerous Operation
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand (two counts)
  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt
  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes

The OPP is crediting updates to the public 9-1-1 system in linking different police jurisdictions, helping make this arrest possible.

The accused has been released from custody and is due in court in Brockville later this month.
