The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) issued a water safety message for its entire watershed as a storm system drenches the nation’s capital.
The organization said the low-pressure weather system associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby is expected to produce heavy rain in Ottawa and the surrounding region. Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning saying that estimates of precipitation could be between 50 to 100 mm.
The system started late Thursday evening and will be travelling east on Friday.
“Despite above normal precipitation over the last month, stream flows have generally stabilized at normal seasonal levels,” RVCA said in its statement.
Riverine flooding in not anticipated according to the organization, although water levels and flows are expected to increased. Some localized flooding could be possible in low-lying areas, including ditches and stormwater features.
Resident near water should prepare including:
- Ensuring sump pumps are clear, in good working condition and have a backwater valve
- Ensuring easy access to a portable backup generator and pump
- Ensuring downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 metres from the dwelling
- Securing items that might float away as flows increase
Until water levels recede, the authority advises everyone to use “extreme caution” around all waterbodies.
The statement is in effect until Friday at 5 p.m.
