The Kingston Police Service has made an arrest in connection with a violent daytime assault that left two people dead and one in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Around 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, officers responded to a report of a serious assault at the encampment around the Integrated Care Hub and safe injection site at 661 Montreal Street.
Spokesperson Const. Anthony Colangeli said police had received reports the suspect may have been wielding an edged or blunt weapon, possibly both.
Officers arrived on scene and located three victims as well as a male suspect.
The suspect was contained in the area where police engaged in an active standoff situation.
After negotiating his surrender for several hours, the suspect was arrested without further incident just before 5 p.m.
Montreal Street was closed between Railway Street and Hickson Avenue for the police investigation but has since reopened.
In a social media post, Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson said he was “absolutely horrified” by the situation and called for the encampment’s removal and for the supervised consumption site to close.
