Just last night at around 11:30 p.m., provincial police caught two drivers speeding down Highway 417.
It happened in The Nation, the Counties of Prescott and Russell, where officers saw a vehicle travelling 173 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. Police then saw a second vehicle pass the first going 184 km/h.
Officials pulled over both vehicles for stunt driving and laid additional charges against the second driver, a 25-year-old from Russell Township, including:
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Operation while impaired – alcohol
- Stunt Driving
Their licence was suspended for 90 days and the car impounded for 14.
The first driver was a 30-year-old from Barrie, Ont. They were charged with stunt driving, resulting in their licence suspended for 30 days and their vehicle impounded.
This comes a few weeks after police in Ottawa clocked a vehicle going 234 km/h on Highway 417 near Blair Road.
The vehicle was not initially stopped but was later spotted on the highway by an Ottawa police K9 unit. That officer attempted to stop the driver but they took off into city streets downtown.
Following an investigation, a 27-year-old man from Ottawa was arrested on Oct. 1.
