Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested two individuals after laying multiple charges including possession of drugs for trafficking.
Leeds County OPP officers were conducting traffic stops near Highway 15 and County Road on Aug. 14 around 3:30 p.m., police said in a X post. Officials witnessed a vehicle complete a U-turn, to avoid the officers.
The vehicle was later stopped and the driver arrested after police determined he was prohibited from driving due to previous convictions. In the car, police found drugs and paraphernalia, and both driver and passenger were arrested.
Individuals charged included a 60-year-old man and 44-year-old woman from Rideau Lakes Township.
According to OPP, the following substances were seized from the vehicle:
- Over 200 grams of suspected cannabis
- Over 30 tablets of suspected codeine
- Half a gram of suspected crack cocaine
- Over 50 grams of suspected methamphetamine
- Over 50 capsules and tablets of suspected narcotics
- Four packs of contraband cigarettes
- Three smartphones
Based on OPP’s post, the accused were charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – four counts
- Possession of over 30g dried cannabis in a public place
- Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court
In addition to the above charges, the man was also charged with:
- Failure to stop on right for emergency vehicle
- Operating an unsafe vehicle
- Permit use of plate not in accordance with act
- Possession of unmarked fine cut tobacco
- Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
- Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
- Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court
The woman was also charged with:
- Obstruct peace officer
- Failure to comply with probation order
Following a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville, the accused have been placed in custody.
