King Edward Avenue continues to be the hot spot for speeders on Ottawa roads this year, but the number of tickets issued by the new photo radar camera continues to decline as drivers adjust their speeds on the Lowertown road.
Newly released statistics show 4,963 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement camera on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street, in October. That’s down from 5,382 speeding tickets in September, 6,337 tickets in September and 7,096 tickets in August.
In July, the photo radar camera on King Edward Avenue caught 10,592 speeders, the highest number of tickets issued by a camera in a single month since the launch of the automated speed enforcement program in 2020.
Ottawa’s 40 automated speed enforcement cameras caught 32,000 speeders in the month of October. A total of 30,033 tickets were issued through the photo radar camera program in September and 32,461 tickets in August.
The camera on Walkley Road, between Halifax Drive and Harding Road, issued 3,726 tickets in October, while the camera on St. Laurent Boulevard issued 1,729 tickets.
In the first 10 months of the year, 323,599 speed tickets were issued by the 40 automated speed enforcement cameras across the city. The cameras issued 220,789 speeding tickets in 2023 (26 cameras), 127,939 tickets in 2022 (17 cameras) and 80,944 tickets in 2021 (eight cameras).
The photo radar camera on King Edward Avenue has issued 52,892 speeding tickets since it was activated in February.
A total of 40 automated speed enforcement cameras were in operation through the first 10 months of the year, and five new cameras will be installed this fall. A report for the transportation committee meeting in November outlined plans to install 15 new photo radar cameras by the end of this year, and another 24 photo radar cameras to be installed in 2025.
Revenue generated by automated speed enforcement cameras and red light cameras are allocated to the Road Safety Reserve Fund, which funds road safety initiatives across the city.
