The Ottawa Fire Services is warning residents that “no ice is safe ice,” after a dog went through the ice near the Manotick Marina.
The Ice Rescue Teams responded to a 9-1-1 call Wednesday morning reporting their dog fell through the ice and into the cold Rideau River.
“Thankfully, the dog was able to self-rescue upon our arrival,” Ottawa Fire Services said on X.
“It’s warm weather today, so please remember No Ice is Safe Ice.”
Last week, firefighters responded to three ice rescues involving dogs.
The rescues included an elderly woman who fell into a pond in Stittsville on Wednesday after trying to pull her dog from the water. The woman was treated for hypothermia symptoms.
“If your dog does go through the ice, never go in and try to rescue them. Call 9-1-1 and try your best to get a visual signal on your pet,” Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick Defazio told CTV News Ottawa last weekend.
“Our ice rescue teams are highly trained, and we have quick response times. The best chance for your pet’s survival is to call us.”
