Police lay 19 charges against Ottawa tow truck drivers in compliance blitz

The Ottawa Police Service says it laid 19 charges against five tow truck drivers during a compliance enforcement operation over the weekend.

Police say compliance checks were conducted to “uphold public safety” and “consumer protection” by ensuring tow truck drivers and companies comply with provincial regulations.

Officers examined compliance for tow truck operators, drivers and vehicle storage facilities. In total, 10 tow truck companies in the city were hit with 17 charges under Ontario’s Towing and Storage Enforcement Act and two charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police say key issues included displaying proper information, consent for services and compliance with inspection protocols.

“This enforcement initiative demonstrates our commitment to protecting residents from unlawful practices in the towing industry,” said Ottawa police acting Sgt. Amy Gagnon in a news release.

“We are dedicated to ensuring compliance with regulations that prioritize public safety and accountability.”

Last Thursday, Ontario Provincial Police announced it had laid numerous charges against two local towing companies. The allegations included providing services without consent and refusing to release a vehicle upon request of the owner.

Some of the charges laid by Ottawa police over the weekend included:

  • Failure to ensure company name displayed on tow trucks as required.
  • Failure to post required information outside yard facilities.
  • Failure to accurately complete daily inspection reports.
  • Providing or attempting to provide services without consent.
  • Failure to document consent for services.
  • Failure to ensure workers comply with the Act and regulations.
  • Improper use of signal devices.
  • Failure to comply with certificate conditions.

Ottawa police say it will continue to monitor and enforce compliance within the towing industry, reminding businesses and drivers to familiarize themselves with provincial regulations.
