Snow, winter travel weather advisory continue to be in effect for Ottawa this Thursday

The winter weather travel advisory that was issued for Ottawa starting Wednesday morning continues to be in effect, as the capital  through the first snowfall of the season.

Environment Canada calls for a high of 0 C, feels like -10 this afternoon with windchill. The weather agency says flurries are ending near noon then it’s going to be mainly cloudy, with a 60 per cent chance of snow. The anticipated local amount of snow is 2 centimetres.

Tonight, a low of -9 C, mainly cloudy skies with a 40 per cent chance of flurries, clearing overnight, are in the forecast.

On Friday, the capital will see a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -7 C. Cloudy periods and a low of -12 C are in the forecast for the night.

The snow will make a comeback this weekend. On Saturday, the weather agency calls for a high of -3 C and a 30 per cent chance of flurries. A low of -7 C and a 40 per cent of flurries or rain showers are anticipated.

Winter weather travel advisory in effect for Ottawa

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory beginning Wednesday morning for Ottawa North , Kanata and Orléans, as the capital receives its first notable snowfall. The advisory was issued Tuesday.

“Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” reads the advisory.

“Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.”

Reduced visibilty is expected due to heavy snow, warns the weather agency.

“Winter driving conditions can be unpredictable, with icy conditions, heavy snowfalls and reduced visibility posing challenges.,” the Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday. “By preparing your vehicle and adjusting your driving habits, you can reduce the risk of collisions and ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.”

Ottawa police responded to 24 collisions in the city Wednesday since 6 a.m. Ottawa was expected to receive a total amount of 10 cm of snow. Environment Canada reported 8 cm of snow at the Ottawa Airport.

Ontario Provincial Police had reported no serious issues or collisions in eastern Ontario as of Wednesday afternoon, but later said there was a serious crash on Sydenham Road, north of Kingston.

School bus delays, cancellations in eastern Ontario

According to the Student Transportation of Esatern Ontario’s (STEO) website, on Thursday, there have been 15 cancellations and 30 delays, as a result of the advisory.
